On Friday, March 19, 2021, Samia Suluhu Hassan, addressed to as Mama Samia, was sworn in as President of the United Republic of Tanzania. The swearing-in ceremony was held in Dar-es-Salaam. She replaced the late President John Magufuli, who died early this week (see here:). She becomes the first woman to lead Tanzania and Africa's only current female country leader. Samia Suluhu was the Vice-President of Tanzania, a function she exercised since 2015 as a running mate of the late Dr John Magufuli and continued in 2020 reelection.

During the ceremony at the State House, she signed the condolence book for the late John Magufuli.

Before becoming Vice-President, Samia Suluhu Hassan served as Minister of Labour, Gender Development and Children in Zanzibar.  She is known for her calm and deep thought, before making a decisions or presenting  views on complex matters, while also making sure she is aligned with policies of the former president.

Given her relatively low profile when she was Vice-President, there are both high expectations and uncertainties regarding her policies.

During the swearing-in ceremony, Ms. Samia Suluhu Hassan clarified her immediate priorities, when she said that:
"This is a time to bury our differences, and be one as a nation. This is not a time for finger pointing, but it is a time to hold hands and move forward together”.

In 2014, she was the Vice-chairperson of the Constituent Assembly, in charge of amending the Constitution.

Samia Suluhu Hassan, 61-year-old, was born in January 1960, in Zanzibar, the semi-autonomous islands off the coast of mainland Tanganyika. Both Zanzibar and Tanganyika form the nation of Tanzania.

She did her undergraduates studies in Tanzania and graduate studies in UK. She is married to Hafid Ameir, a university professor. They have four children, with one, Mwanu Hafidh Ameir, a current member of the Zanzibar House of Representatives.
